20 Aug 2019T7655 v1.29.0 software update (Part 3)
Following the initial release for Bush boxes, the update server for the T7655 is now serving the production release of the v1.29.0 software for Hitachi boxes. If your box is connected to the internet via the ethernet socket on the back, you may find it has already automatically installed the update (if you have that feature enabled, otherwise there is an option in the menus to manually check and update). Should your box not be connected to the internet, you may wish to perform the update via a USB memory stick - the update file is now available for download.

This update fixes the infamous recording library deletion issue that cropped up in v1.28.0 - it has already been tested by several of those affected to ensure the problem was fixed, and has been pushed to all Bush branded T7655 boxes over 2 months ago, with no ill-effects.

9 Aug 2019End of the line at Argos?
This week saw the disappearance of the last standing Vestel PVR from the Argos website, recently heavily reduced in a clearance sale. For 13 years, Argos have been selling Vestel-made PVRs, starting with the Digihome PVR80 in the summer of 2006 (Vestel's very first T810 PVR model for the UK market). As customers, many of us used to look forward to the twice yearly new Argos catalogue, to see what the next new PVR would be in Vestel's range.

A sad day indeed, although maybe they will stock the new T7675 model in the future. For now, the Finlux branded T7655 and T7675 are the only Vestel PVRs now available in the UK, available from other retailers.

2 Jul 2019T7655 v1.29.0 software update (Part 2)
Following on from the initial release, as of today, the update server for the T7655 is now serving the production release of the v1.29.0 software for Bush boxes. Before that, a debug version was being sent to boxes, which is perfectly functional. The only real difference that you may have noticed is that the EPG has "CRID" information appended to the end of the programme descriptions.

If you already have v1.29.0 and wish to switch to the production version, you will need to downgrade to v1.25.0 via USB first and then the box will either pick up v1.29.0 from the update server by checking for updates on the T7655, or you can manually install the production v1.29.0 via USB.

29 May 2019T7655 v1.29.0 software update
Since 13 May 2019, Vestel released the v1.29.0 software update for Bush branded T7655 boxes that run the Emerald software platform. If your box is connected to the internet via the ethernet socket on the back, you may find it has already automatically installed the update (if you have that feature enabled, otherwise there is an option in the menus to manually check and update). Should your box not be connected to the internet, you may wish to perform the update via a USB memory stick - the update file is now available for download for Bush only. The Hitachi version has not yet been released.

This update fixes the infamous recording library deletion issue that cropped up in v1.28.0 - it has already been tested by some of those affected to ensure the problem has been fixed.

15 May 2019New T7675 Freeview HD model
After over 5 years of the T7655, a new Vestel PVR model is now available. The T7675 has been in Vestel's product catalogue for a couple of years, but only recently did it enter production and go on sale in the UK. Currently, only one model/brand is available and that is the Finlux T7675-1TB, Vestel's own brand, from various retailers including Amazon, Hughes Electrical, Very and Littlewoods. Not much is currently known about the new model except from the obvious new case/chassis design (presumably now all plastic, unlike all previous models which were mainly metal) and built-in WiFi.

As a side note, a Finlux T7655 box is also available, similar to the Bush and Hitachi models, but requiring a different software build for updates.

25 Apr 2019T7655 v1.29.0 testers required
Volunteers for testing v1.29.0 for the T7655 are required. This update should fix the randomly disappearing recordings problem in v1.28.0. Send me an email or PM on Twitter @VestelPVR and I'll send you a download link and instructions (knowledge of unzipping a 7zip archive to a USB memory stick is pretty much as complicated as it gets).
11 Feb 2019T7655 v1.28.0 software problems
This is going to unfortunately be a bit late for some, but it is hard for me to track updates these days since the closure of the DTG engineering channel for OADs. There was an update (v1.28.0) made available via internet updates for T7655 last month which has since been pulled, due to it wiping recordings plus other problems! I have not had the chance to test this software personally.

Advice is to make sure automatic updates are disabled, although you would not have gotten the update with no ethernet cable connected. If your box did update to v1.28.0, you should revert to v1.25.0 using a USB memory stick.

More news as and when I obtain more detail.

9 May 2018T7655 v1.25.0 software update
Yesterday, Vestel released a software update for Bush and Hitachi branded T7655 boxes that run the Emerald software platform. If your box is connected to the internet via the ethernet socket on the back, you may find it has already automatically installed the update (if you have that feature enabled, otherwise there is an option in the menus to manually check and update). Should your box not be connected to the internet, you may wish to perform the update via a USB memory stick - the update files are now available for download for both Bush and Hitachi (be sure to pick the correct one!). Unfortunately, it will not be available as an over-air-download as that facility was shut down at the end of April (affects all devices and manufacturers).

The exact changes in this release since v1.22.1 are unknown apart from a fix for the BBC apps which had stopped working. Presumably, there have been quite a few other fixes due to the jump in version number. This version has been deemed stable after several months of testing.

21 Apr 2018Engineering channel closes - RIP Over-Air-Downloads
The DTG have said "Just to remind you that after many years of faithful service, the Engineering Channel is being wound down by DTG Testing in preparation to fully close it on Monday 30th April 2018."

This is sad news for Vestel PVR owners as this means there is now no chance of ever receiving any over-air-downloads, which was traditionally the only method used to update the software on your boxes. Only the latest T7655 (Emerald) model is capable of receiving software updates over the internet updates, although recently Vestel removed all software from the update site so it is has not been possible to receive upgrades at all for the past few months. It is possible that the T7655 (Emerald) boxes may receive a software update soon, but you will need to connect it to the internet to get it.

28 Aug 2016T7655 v1.22.1 software over-air-download
A second OAD for Bush and Hitachi branded Vestel T7655 boxes is scheduled for broadcast from 10am on 30th August until 9am on 1st September (this is via your aerial, not the internet).

The new software contains some fixes for "recording issues", minor fixes and improvements, although the exact details are currently unknown.

6 Oct 2015T835 boxes crashing and rebooting
It has recently been reported that Vestel T835 boxes have started mysteriously rebooting themselves during various operations. This issue may possibly also affect T825 boxes. Although the precise cause is currently unknown, it is believed to be related to the increase in the number of channels available on Freeview. The T835 was originally developed and tested when there were less than 100 channels, but now there are over 140 at the time of writing, many of which are internet streaming channels (which require a Freeview HD device) or placeholders.

The recommended way to avoid this problem is to delete any unwanted channels from the channel list and to ensure low power mode is enabled in the configuration settings screen. Deleting channels also has the benefit of making the EPG more faster and responsive, and it won't slow down so quickly the longer the box is in use. Also, it is important to perform a retune whenever there are major channel changes on the Freeview platform (channels moving to a different multiplex, for example).

31 Aug 2015Freeview HD encoder update fixes audio problem
Earlier this month, the broadcast level encoders for the PSB3 and COM7 multiplexes (these hold all the HD channels and some DVB-T2 SD channels) were updated and now fix an issue that triggered audio glitches/pops/clicks on PVRs, using Broadcom chipsets, made by various manufacturers. This issue started in October 2014 on PSB3 when there was previous encoder update, but had always occurred even before then on COM7.

In December 2014, Vestel and Broadcom had provided a software fix for this in the latest Emerald-based T7655 PVR models, which was publicly released in April 2015 (v1.20.2). Earlier models did not receive this fix, but thanks to the encoder changes, the problem is no longer an issue for T7300, T7655 and T7555 Amber2 owners too (for now, at least).

24 Aug 2015Hitachi T7655 v1.21.3 software over-air-download
The very first OAD for Vestel T7655 boxes is scheduled for broadcast from 10am on 24th August until 9am on 26th August (this is via your aerial, not the internet). The update is currently only for Hitachi branded boxes - please note that the DTG website mistakenly mentions Bush and says the software version is v1.21.8, but really it is v1.21.3. The new software contains minor fixes and improvements, including the new Freeview logo and it will no longer crash when selecting the favourites filter in the EPG if you have not set any favourite channels.
4 May 2015T7655 Emerald v1.20.2 Software for Bush boxes
The v1.20.2 software update for Bush branded T7655 Emerald is now available, following its release for the Hitachi HDR5T01 and HDR10T01 last month. It fixes various issues present since day one and the previous latest public software, v1.11. You will need to have your box connected to the internet, via the ethernet socket on the back, in order to receive the update. Changes in this release include, and note that this is NOT an exhaustive list:
  • Fixed broken series recording functionality
  • Fixed audio glitches/pops/clicks on HD channels and DVB-T2 SD channels, triggered by encoder changes at broadcast level
  • Fixed EPG population issue where programme descriptions were not available for the full 8 days
  • Fixed accurate recording start signal from always being ignored when programme starts late (recordings no longer start too early)
  • Fixed video quality issue affecting SD and 1080i HD broadcasts (1080p was ok) which caused flickering and ghosting due to apparent deinterlacing artefacts
  • Fixed aspect ratio not changing when playing recordings containing mixed 4:3 / 16:19 material
  • Fixed case where recordings could change channel mid-recording or were missing parts of the programme (could happen if you are actively using the box whilst two recordings are in progress)
  • Various cosmetic user interface fixes
22 Apr 2015T7655 Emerald v1.20.2 Software Update
The long awaited public software update for T7655 Emerald boxes has now been released, fixing various issues present since day one and the previous latest public software, v1.11. Currently it is only available for Hitachi HDR5T01 and HDR10T01 models - the update for Bush models will follow soon.
15 Feb 2015New Hitachi HDR10T01 (T7655) now available
The first T7655 based box to ship with a 1Tb hard drive is the new Hitachi HDR10T01, which recently went on sale at Argos. It uses the newer Emerald software, as did newly manufactured HDR5T01 units from last summer (before that the HDR5T01 used the Amber software) and the newer Bush branded units. Hopefully, it uses a newer version than the buggy/broken software version that the HDR5T01 shipped with!
16 Aug 2014New T7655 models with BBC Connected Red Button
Two new T7655 models are now available at Argos: the Bush B320DTRN and B500DTRN. These are replacing the four old Bush T7655 boxes (which themselves are available at reduced clearance prices) and these new ones have the BBC Connected Red Button service and also BBC Sport and BBC News apps. The MHEG red button iPlayer is replaced by the new HTML5 based iPlayer with HD playback possible.
3 Apr 2014T8300 v2.58 Software Update
Slightly off-topic for this website, but thought it was worth mentioning that there is a v2.58 software fix available for the Vestel T8300 Freeview HD boxes, badged using various brand names. See the service bulletin document for full details on how to manually apply the update (it looks like there will be no over-the-air update) and links to the software files. Those with boxes running v2.54 or older will find that they can only pick up a single HD (DVB-T2) mux, and with the COM7 mux rollout well underway, this means that the box has to be updated to v2.58 in order to pick up all the HD channels available.

If your box has a USB port, the update process is easy - just a memory stick required. However, if yours doesn't have a USB port, the only way is via a SCART to RS232 cable which can either be made or purchased on eBay, and applying the update using a PC, preferably with a real serial port (some USB->RS232 adaptors can also be used).

Here is the full list of affected models:

  • ISIS ISIDVBT2
  • DIGIHOME FREEVIEW HD BOX
  • FERGUSON F02HDB
  • METRONIC T2 HD ZAPBOX
  • XENIUS DVBX100HD
  • BUSH DVB680
  • FINLUX DVBT2_665 FREEVIEW HD BOX
  • LINSAR FHD1
  • ANTIFERENCE HDSB
  • LOWRY GSHDSTB1001
  • LUXOR LUXDVBT2690
  • KRYSTEL DVBT2
  • AKURA AVX665
  • NEXT FREEVIEW HD BOX
  • TECHWOOD FREEVIEW HD BOX
  • MURPHY T650HD

31 Jan 2014Brand new user manuals for sale
Lost your user manual? Bought a secondhand box with no manual? No problem... I'm pleased to announce a new service whereby users in the UK can order a brand new printed manual for a selection of different Vestel PVR models. Manuals are available in the standard original A5 size or a larger A4 size for easier reading. The user manuals page has also been updated with some new PDF download manuals and links have been fixed to the Hitachi manuals.
20 Jan 2014Four new Bush branded T7655 models at Argos
Following the addition of the Hitachi T7655 model in June 2013, four new Bush branded T7655 boxes are now available from Argos. These comprise of 320Gb and 500Gb models, each available with or without "Smart" capabilities.
20 Jul 2013Boxes being crashed/rebooted by Sky!
If you're reading this, you may have been experiencing strange problems with your recorder since yesterday. Things like the box rebooting unexpectedly whilst in use or failed recordings. After a number of posts cropped up today on various forums, my preliminary investigations are showing that the EIT/EPG data is corrupt for all Sky channels, including Pick TV and Challenge. Specifically, the programme CRID is malformed (missing an all important '/' character which separates the authority and data portions of the CRID) for every programme on these channels. This is causing the software to crash and triggering a reboot.

T825, T835, T836 and T845R models will crash when they update timers in the background if you have series timers set on Sky channels. T7300, T7650 and T7655 models do not crash, fortunately, but they will not be able to schedule a series timer on any Sky channels. T810 and T816 models are unaffected. Vestel boxes are not the only ones to be affected - Sony DVD/HDD recorders have been hit by the fault too.

The solution for now is to delete all timers that you have set on Pick TV and Challenge, until Sky fix things.

[Update 14:00, 21 Jul 2013]
It appears that the corrupt EIT data on Sky channels has now been fixed, and normal service has been resumed. It is now safe to set up your series timers on Sky channels again.

29 Jun 2013New T7655 model now available from Argos
Vestel's latest PVR model, the T7655, is now available from Argos. The Hitachi branded 500Gb model is currently listed at £169.99. The T7655 is very similar to the T7650 in every sense, but the unit is noticably smaller at 228x42x137mm, making it Vestel's smallest PVR to date. The smaller size made possible by a redesigned mainboard and use of a 2.5" SATA HDD, compared to the 3.5" drives used in previous models. One significent difference is that the T7655 uses Broadcom BCM3461 DVB-T2 demodulator chips, whereas previous models used Sony CXD2820R DVB-T2 demodulator chips.

The Hitachi replaces the Bush 320Gb and 1Tb T7650 models, at Argos, which are being phased out and heavily discounted at £99.99 and £139.99 respectively, at the time of writing - get one while you can! The pricing of the newer T7655 is pretty optimistic, and the T7650 models are very similar in comparison, but far better value for money. Please note that the new Bush 500Gb Freeview+ HD recorder is made by another manufacturer and has nothing to do with Vestel.

3 Jun 2013Website downtime - relocation to UK
Apologies if you have had trouble accessing this site over the past week. Unfortunately, my hosting provider was having major problems which were not resolved after 5 days. This issue prevented the website from responding, and as this was not the first time I have been hit with such problems, I switched to a different hosting provider yesterday. Everything is now back up and running, and should hopefully be faster and more reliable than before, especially as the site is now located in the UK for the first time.
3 Apr 2013Shop launched (powered by Amazon.co.uk)
A shop is now available from this site, listing some of the best deals on Vestel PVR products, spare parts and cables, powered by Amazon.co.uk.
30 Jan 2013New T7660 Saorview model discovered
A new Saorview-certified T7660 model is now available in Ireland. This model is technically almost identical to the T7650 except in one major way: as Saorview uses MPEG4 over DVB-T for HD content, the hardware ships with DVB-T tuners rather than DVB-T2, meaning the T7660 cannot receive Freeview HD channels.
19 Nov 2012New T7650 v1.49 software over-air-download
The very first OAD for Vestel T7650 boxes is scheduled for broadcast from 10am on 21st November until 9am on 23rd November. The update will be picked up by all brands of T7650, including Bush and Logik. The new software contains many fixes and improvements, including the sort order of the timer list now being sticky and the ability to record two channels and watch another, on the same multiplex, live (or record two programmes on the same multiplex and watch any channel live).
19 Nov 2012New T7650 model spotted at Currys
Currys now have their own Logik branded 1Tb T7650 box on sale, at the time of writing reduced to £169.99, beating the price of Argos' Bush model by a significent margin.
20 Aug 2012New T836 v3.5 software over-air-download
From 10am on 20th August until 9am on 22nd August, a new v3.5 software update is being broadcast for Vestel T836 boxes. Details of the update are unknown.
14 Aug 2012New T835 v5.2 software over-air-download
From 10am on 17th August until 9am on 20th August, a new v5.2 update is being broadcast. The update will be picked up by all brands of T835 box, despite the DTG site implying it is only for Hitachi models. This new version abandons the changes made between v3.7 and v4.8, and is based on the trusted v3.4 software, but with the addition of Target Region Descriptor support while tuning (as appeared in v4.6) and extended programme information is now available on live tv by pressing the info button twice (without needing to view the EPG), a feature brought back from older generation boxes. As such, this should avoid all the infamous stablity, reliability and responsiveness issues that occurred in v4.6 and v4.8, bring performance back to how it was in v3.4.
21 Jul 2012New T836 v3.3 software over-air-download
From 10am on 23rd July until 9am on 25th July, a new v3.3 update is being broadcast for Vestel T836 boxes. Details of the update are unknown.
15 Jun 2012New T7650 model spotted on Argos website
Argos have a Bush branded T7650 with 1Tb HDD listed on their website priced at a hefty £249.99, although currently it seems it is not in stock at the time of writing. This model is a new improved compact version of the previous T7300 model, of the same form factor as the earlier T835 models. Some early photos and information can also be found over at Recombu, although the design may be slightly different on the Bush model - e.g. BBC iPlayer is now accessed via the red button.
31 Mar 2012New T835 v4.8 software over-air-download
From 10am on 2nd April until 9am on 4th April, a new v4.8 update is being broadcast. The update will be picked up by all brands of T835 box, despite the DTG site implying it is only for Hitachi models.

The update is a first step in addressing the infamous problems introduced in the previous v4.6 over-the-air-download in January. However, although it may offer some improvement, it does not unfortunately fix all the problems reported. Owners of boxes currently running v4.6 are advised to complete the update. Whereas those running v4.1 and earlier should think twice - it is recommended to avoid the v4.8 update. There will be a new version soon to address all the troubles of v4.6 (and v4.8).

21 Mar 2012New T836 v3.2 software over-air-download
From 10am on 23rd March until 9am on 26th March, a new v3.2 update is being broadcast for Vestel T836 boxes. Details of the update are unknown.
24 Jan 2012New T835 v4.6 software over-air-download
From 10am on 25th January until 9am on 27th January, a brand new v4.6 update is being broadcast. The DTG site say the update is just for Hitachi boxes, but in fact the update is applicable to and will be picked up by all brands of T835 box. Details of the update are scarce, but it most likely brings a number of internal fixes since v3.4.

However, one notable new feature is the addition of Target Region Descriptor support that allows you to pick which transmitter to use when scanning for channel which is useful if your box picks up a signal from multiple transmitters. Also, support for the Freeview HD green button trailer booking has been added.

21 Jan 2012Vestel's first DVB-T2 HD PVR released
Vestel's new T7300 DVB-T2 Freeview+ HD box has been launched after several months of development and testing. Currently, it is only available from Argos under the guise of a Bush 320Gb Freeview HD Recorder.
18 Apr 2011Disappearing channels on T810 & T816
If you own a Vestel T810 or T816 based PVR, you may be finding that channels are disappearing from your channel list overnight or after powering off/on at the mains. Exactly which channels disappear is dependent on your local TV transmitter. Basically, these boxes are currently limited to a maximum of 99 channels.

The recommended solution for avoiding this is to perform an automatic channel scan and immediately manually delete any unwanted channels from the channel list, so that you have less than 100 channels. T816 owners should also ensure that the "Scan encrypted" option in the setup/configuration menu is set to "No" which will ensure that most of the channels that cannot be viewed on non-TopUp TV boxes anyway will not be added to your channel list.
